GOING TO LARGA DURACION

🆔LARGA DURACIÓN RESIDENCE IN SPAIN

After living legally in Spain for 5 continuous years, you can apply for Larga Duración (long-term residence). 🎉

This is the permanent residence card that allows you to live and work in Spain indefinitely, under the same conditions as Spanish citizens.

It’s one of the most important steps in your immigration journey — once you get it, you’ll never need to “renew” your residence like before!

💡 What Is the Larga Duración Permit?

The Larga Duración is a long-term residence authorization that gives you the right to:

➡️ Live in Spain permanently.
➡️ Work freely (as an employee or self-employed).
➡️ Keep your residence even if you stop working.
➡️ Renew your card only every 5 years — and the renewal is simple and automatic.

It’s your “forever card” in Spain 🇪🇸

✅ Who Can Apply?

To qualify for Larga Duración, you must meet these requirements:

  • Have lived legally and continuously in Spain for at least 5 years.

  • Have no criminal record in Spain or in any country where you’ve lived in the last 5 years.

  • Not be a citizen of the EU, EEA, or Switzerland.

  • Not be banned from entering Spain or any Schengen country.

  • Not represent a risk to public order, safety, or public health.

💡 Continuous residence means you can’t have been out of Spain for:

  • More than 6 months at a time, or

  • More than 10 months total during the 5 years.
If you were abroad for work, you can be away up to 18 months total.

📋 Documents You Need

To apply for the Larga Duración card, you’ll need:

  • Application form EX–11 (signed).

  • Full passport (all pages).

  • Old passport, if you have a new one.

  • NIE card (front and back).

  • Proof of residence in Spain for the last 5 years – e.g., padrón histórico, contracts, work history, or previous residence cards.

⚠️ All foreign documents must be officially translated into Spanish and apostilled or legalized as required.

🗓️ When Can You Apply?

You can apply from 60 days before your current residence card expires, and up to 90 days after.

Even if your card expires, you can still apply within those 90 days without losing your rights.

Once the renewal is submitted, your old card remains valid until you receive the result — and you can keep working legally.

⏳ How Long Does It Take?

The Immigration Office usually takes up to 3 months to issue a decision.

✅ If no response arrives after 3 months, your application is considered approved automatically (positive silence).

After receiving approval, you must:

  1. Request your new TIE card (fingerprints) within 1 month.

  2. The card will be valid for 5 years.

🕒 Validity and Renewal

  • The Larga Duración card is valid for 5 years.

  • Renewal is simple and fast — just fingerprints and updated documents.

  • You won’t lose it if you stop working or studying.
