WHAT IS THE SS NUMBER?

What is the SS number?  

                                                                                         

The SS number (NUSS or NAF) is the number that is assigned to Spanish and foreigners in Spain to identify them with the Social Security System.

 

Everyone has an SS number?

SS number is for legal workers, family members of legal workers, students, those receiving pensions etc..

 

Is it the same than NIE?

​

No, it is different from the NIE. The NIE identifies all the foreigners with legal residence in Spain (with or without working permit) and starts by X, Y or Z and the SS number is for spanish or foreigners who can work or do an internship, those who are receiving a pension or minors and starts by the 2 digits of your postal code (08 for Barcelona, 28 for Madrid) followed by 10 more digits.

 

Is the same number that the Tarjeta Sanitaria?

In most of Comunidades Autónomas is a different number. Tarjeta sanitaria can also be given to no legal residents.

 

Do I need to have an SS number to be able to work?

​

Yes it is a requirement to have an SS number before you can be alta in the SS.

 

Which workers can get an SS number?

​

  • Those who get residence permit for first time (arraigo social etc..)

  • Those who come to Spain as petition or oferta de trabajo.

 

As a foreign student, do I need an SS number if I want to work/internship?

​

Yes you need to have an SS number.
